Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker Eddy was born in the northeastern United States in the early nineteenth century. During her youth, she was often ill and tried a variety of medical and non-medical health systems with little success.
In 1866 she suffered a severe fall and doctors thought she did not have long to live. On her death bed, Mrs. Eddy turned to the Bible where she read about two of Jesus’ healings. She saw Jesus’ work and teachings in a new light and believed she had discovered a truth that, when applied consistently and correctly, could “heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons.” She called her discovery Christian Science in recognition of the fact that this system could be used by anyone with the same demonstrable, expected results.
Not only was Mrs. Eddy fully healed, but she went on to heal countless others of all types of ailments during her lifetime. As people asked her to explain how her ability to heal, she decided to write down the inspiration she had received in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This is the textbook of our church and you will hear parts of it read during our church services. You can listen to Science and Health read to you here.
Mary Baker Eddy became a public lecturer, teacher, and best-selling author. She founded a college for teaching Christian Science healing, an international church, and multiple publications, including the award-winning Christian Science Monitor newspaper. Her church was instituted to “reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”
